Notes:

There were two persons named John H. Arnold. The first was a son of Meredith Dugger Arnold, and was born in about . He appeared in the 1850 Johnson County, TN census as an 11 year old son of Meredith. He could not be identified in subsequent census records for Johnson County, meaning he either moved out of the county, or that he died.
The second John H. Arnold appears in the 1860 Johnson County census as a 5 year old member of Meredith Dugger's household. In this listing, he is placed out of birth year sequence, and is listed at the bottom. In the 1870 census, he is listed as 15 year old John H. McQueen in the household of Clara McQueen, who is the daughter of Meredith D. Arnold. Clara had married Wiley A. McQueen on 7 Oct 1860 following the 1860 census. Their daughter Hannah is also listed in the Clara Arnold McQueen's 1870 household. Since the marriage of Clara Arnold to Wiley A. McQueen follows the birth of John H. Arnold by five years, it is uncertain who his father is.

John H. Arnold, age 85, died at his home, Butler, Tenn., RFD Route 3, Thursday night at 11:45 o'clock after a short illness.
Funeral services will be conducted from the Doe Baptist church Saturday morning at 10:00 with the Rev. Gregg, pastor of the church officiating. Interment will be in the Arnold cemetery.
Survivors are six daughters, Mrs. Nell Pleasant, Mrs. Aradia Davis, Mrs. Elsie Davis, Mrs. Ruth Stout, Mrs. Maude Stout, and Mrs. Lottie Gentry, all of Johnson County; three sons, G. G., A. J. and E. W. Arnold, all of Johnson County.

Mrs. Lottie[sic] Ossie Garland, 73, of Rt. 6, Johnson City, died at her residence Thursday afternoon, from an apparent heart attack. She was a native of Johnson County, but had made her home in Carter County for the past 13 years. She was a daughter of the late John and Elizabeth Robinson Arnold. She was preceded in death by her husband, Willis C. Garland, who died May 31, 1969. She was a member of the Sinking Creek Baptist Church.
Survivors include one son, Farris Garland, Rt. 6, Johnson City; five daughters, Mrs. Faye DeLoach, Hazel Park, Mich., Mrs. Gertrude Kloth, El Cajon, Calif., Mrs. Effie Mae Lusk, San Diego, Calif., Mrs. Effie Mae Lusk, San Diego, Calif.[name repeated], Mrs. Betty Weatherman, Tucson, Ariz., and Mrs. Ruby Garland, Johnson City; one brother, Eddie Arnold, Butler; one sister, Mrs. Elva Stout, Johnson City; 13 grandchildren; 7 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were conducted Sunday, 2 p.m., from the Sinking Creek Baptist Church with the Rev. Reece Harris officiating. Burial was in Happy Valley Memorial Park.
Pall-bearers[sic] were Stanley Brown, Milton Fair, Robert Murphy, Claude Laferty, Richard Barnette and James Mathes.
Flower-bearers were ladies of the church and neighbors.

Butler — Windom E. Arnold, age 91, of 411 Pine Orchard Road, Butler, Tennessee, went home to be with the Lord on Monday, September 6th, 2004, at the Mountain City Health Center following an extended illness. He was a native of Johnson County. He was born September 17th, 1912, to the late Grant and Cora Davis Arnold. Mr. Arnold was preceded in death by his wife, Lena Campbell Arnold; sisters, Goldie Estep and Onnie Pleasant; and Brothers, Lawton and Stancil Arnold. He was a member of the Bethany Baptist Church and was a self-employed sawmill owner for many years. Mr. Arnold is survived by 2 daughters, Ilene Breeding and Husband, Doug, Bristol, Va., Norma Newton and Husband, Kenneth, Bluff City, Tn.; 1 son, Bud Arnold and wife, Helen, Butler, Tennessee; 7 Grandchildren: Gregg and Stephen Breeding, David Arnold, Dianna Luckett, Donna Fritts, Jessica Whiteaker and Rebecca Newton; 7 Great-Grandchildren: Jordan, Grace and Anna Breeding, Ashley and Nathan Arnold, Trevor and Haden Luckett. Several Nieces and Nephews also survive. Funeral Services for Windom E. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II.

Private graveside services were held Thursday, December 12, 2002at Happy Valley Memorial Park.

Frances Arnold Campbell, 90, of Elizabethton, passed away Tuesday, December 15, 2015, at Florida Hospital Memorial Medical Center, Daytona Beach, Fla. A native of Johnson County, she was a daughter of the late Andrew J. and Eliza Stout Arnold. She had lived most of her life in Elizabethton before going to Florida this month. Mrs. Campbell was a longtime member of Calvary Baptist Church and more recently of Freedom Road Baptist Church. She was a retired manager of Droke Shoe Store. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Richard D. Campbell, November 7, 2015, and by two sisters and one brother. Survivors include her daughter, Anne Campbell Davis and husband Ray, Ormond Beach, Fla.; her grandchildren, Rick MacLean, St. Louis, Mo., and Dr. Brett L. MacLean and wife Sheri and their four children, Dawson, Kenan, Silas and Haven of Mali, Africa; and two sisters, Pat Burleson and husband James, Johnson City, and Madelyn Jones, Elizabethton. Graveside services for Frances Arnold Campbell will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday, January 9, at Happy Valley Memorial Park with Pastor Steve Davis officiating. Family and friends will assemble at the funeral home at 10:30 a.m. Saturday to go to the cemetery.

JOHNSON CITY - Pat Arnold Burleson, Johnson City, died Tuesday, December 3, 2019, at Life Care Center of Gray, following an extended illness.

Pat was a native of Elizabethton and had been a resident of Johnson City since 1959. She was a daughter of the late A. J. and Eliza Stout Arnold.

Pat was a homemaker, but formerly worked as a secretary then licensed Insurance Agent with American National and Independent Life Insurance Companies. She was an ASL Interpreter for the deaf and worked with the Johnson City School System as well as various local churches.

Pat was a member of Boones Creek Bible Church, the Daughters of the American Revolution, a former member of the Women's Republican Club and former Girl Scout Troop Leader.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, James G. Burleson, in 2016, a grandson, Joshua Grant Ramsey, her brother, Delmas Arnold, three sisters, Velma Roberts, Geneva White and Frances Campbell.

Pat is survived by three children, Tom Burleson and wife Nancy, Kingsport, Jamie Burleson Harber and husband Walt, Johnson City, Cyndi Burleson Ramsey, Johnson City; one sister, Madelyn Jones, Elizabethton; two grandsons, John and James Burleson, Kingsport; several nieces and nephews.

The family would like to extend a very special "Thank You" to the nursing staff of Life Care Center of Gray for their loving care of Pat during her stay.

The funeral service will be conducted Saturday, December 21, 2019, at 12:00 noon, from the East Chapel of Appalachian Funeral Home, with Pastor Dale Cunningham, officiating. Special music will be provided by Lee Ann Davis, soloist. The graveside committal service will follow in Happy Valley Memorial Park.

Madelyn Arnold Jones, of Elizabethton, Tenn., passed away unexpectedly Tuesday, December 24, 2019, at her residence. A native of Elizabethton, she was the daughter of the late Andrew Jackson Arnold and Eliza Veda Stout Arnold.
Mrs. Jones was a 1949 graduate of Happy Valley High School and worked in the U.S. Navy Department from 1952 to 1955 before returning to Tennessee. She retired in 1999 as Deputy Clerk of the Carter County Circuit Court Clerk Office. She was a member of Calvary Baptist Church.
Mrs. Jones was very funny, smart, helpful and loved everybody. She enjoyed spending time at the lake and with her church family.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, James Dean Jones Sr., four sisters and one brother.
Those left to cherish her memory include a daughter, Kelly Anne Jones Barkley and husband David, Cary, N.C.; a son, James Dean Jones Jr. and wife Myra Little Jones, Elizabethton; and a granddaughter, Megan Danielle Magwood, Chapel Hill, N.C. Several nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews also survive.
A graveside service to honor the life of Madelyn Arnold Jones will be conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday, December 29, at Happy Valley Memorial Park with Dr. Kenneth Jordan officiating.

ARNOLD, Delmer C., 74, went to be with his Lord at 12:47 a.m. on Sunday, April 30, 1995. He is survived by his beloved wife of 49 years, Mary A. Minopoli-Arnold of Naples, Italy; daughter and son-in-law, Ruth and Tom Roubal; son and daughter-in-law, Eddie W. and Dianne; daughter and son-in-law, Jennifer and John Delfrari; daughter and son-in-law, Dianna and Richard Rosler; 12 grandchildren and two grandchildren’s spouses; and one great-grandchild. He is also survived by his sister, Berneice Matherly; brothers, Park, James and Elwood Arnold of Johnson County, TN; as well as a brother-in-law and family from Italy who live in Tucson. Born in Johnson County, TN, he served in North Africa and Italy with the 5th Army Medical Corps during World War II and was awarded two bronze stars. Living in Tucson for 48 years, he was employed as manager of Mulcahy Lumber Company and retired from Grant Road Lumber Company. He was awarded “Outstanding Salesman of the Year’in Tucson prior to retirement. Services will be at SOUTH LAWN MORTUARY CHAPEL, 5401 S. Park Ave., at 1:00 p.m. on Wednesday, May 3, 1995 with Dr. Bill Parker officiating.

Park is survived by his loving wife and best friend of 65 years, Evelyn "Sue" Arnold; daughter and son-in-law, Sandy and Lynn Snyder; brother, Elwood Arnold; grandchildren: Rick Snyder and wife, Miranda, Tom Snyder and wife, Sally, and April Grindstaff and husband, Kenny, all of Butler, TN; great grandchildren: Megan Grindstaff Hart and husband, Casey, Joshua Grindstaff, Brianna Snyder, Dawson Snyder and Addy Snyder; daughter-in-law, Faye Brickey, of NC; special sister-in-law, Corine Arnold; sisters-in-law, Mary Arnold of Tucson, AZ, and Mary Kate Arnold, of Butler, TN; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral Services will be conducted at 7:00 p.m. Monday, December 9, 2013, at the Little Doe Baptist Church with Pastor Kreg Smith to officiate. Special Guest Speaker will be Claude Duncan. Special music will be provided by the Little Doe Baptist Church Choir.

The family will receive friends from 5-7:00 p.m. at the church prior to the service.

Graveside Service & Interment with Military Honors, conducted by the Johnson County Honor Guard, will be held at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, December 10, 2013, from the Butler Memorial Cemetery. James G. Arnold, 83, of Elkhart passed away peacefully in his home at 9:15 am, Saturday, May 28, 2011. James was born on February 27, 1928 in Butler, TN, the son of the late Eddie and Eliza (Pleasant) Arnold.

His is survived by his loving wife, Corine of Elkhart, three children, Frankie Arnold of Mishawaka, Judy Lewandowski of Theodore, AL, and Linda Tomlinson of St. Petersburg, FL; step children, Shirley Sawyer of Elkhart, Tina Arnold of Butler, TN, and Lisa Wheeler of Elkhart; granddaughter, Christel Dorbin of Granger and five great grandchildren, Christian Correll, Haylie Buck, Ashley Dorbin, Noah Buck and Cody Dorbin. James was the last surviving charter member of New Life Baptist Church, which began in 1950. He was very involved with the church and served as Deacon.

BUTLER - Elwood A. Arnold, 89, Butler, passed away unexpectedly Monday, June 14, 2021 in the Sycamore Shoals Hospital. He was born July 29, 1931 in Butler to the late Eddie & Eliza Pleasant Arnold. In earlier years Elwood was a trucker. In 1971 he opened Arnolds Auto Sales. Elwood was a member and Deacon of Little Doe Baptist Church. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife: Doris Garrison Arnold who passed away December 20, 2006, by a sister: Bernice Matherly and four brothers: J.E., Park, James & Delmar Arnold. In his spare time, he loved to farm.

Survivors include his sons & daughters-in-law: Randy & Tina Arnold, Butler and Chuck & Becky Arnold, Gray. Two Grandchildren: Ryan Arnold and Hope Arnold. Lillian Estep Lowe, age 90 of Mountain City, passed away on Monday, November 1, 2021. She was a native of Johnson County and was born July 13, 1931 to the late Wilburn and Golda Estep. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Delmer H. Lowe, Sr. and brother, Jay G. Estep. Survivors include her daughter, Frances Lowe Hodges and husband Gordon of Smyrna, Georgia; son, Delmer H. Lowe, Jr. and wife Beverly of Mountain City; one sister, Betty Huddleston of Butler; one brother, Hillie Estep of Atlanta, Georgia and several nieces and nephews. She was a member of Bethel Baptist Church and previously active in the Auxiliary of Gideon’s International.

Shirley Wright Pierce, 80, of Elizabethton, went home to be with the Lord on Thursday, May 16, 2019, in Charlottesville, Va. Shirley was born in Johnson County, Tenn., to the late Stansell Arthur Arnold and Alice Wanda Ruth Stout Arnold. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her first husband, Eugene Wright.
Shirley was a loving, Christian wife, mother and grandmother and was a member of Centerview Church of Christ. She had worked as an administrative assistant and enjoyed dancing, spending time with her family and friends and going to eat at Joe's Crab Shack.
Those left to cherish her memory include her husband, Sonny E. Pierce, of the home; her son, Eric Wright and wife Leisa of Elizabethton; her stepson, Christopher Julian Pierce, also of Elizabethton; her grandchildren, Jeremy Wright and wife Natalie, Jonathan Wright and Robert Allen Pierce, all of Elizabethton, and Keisha Ann Pierce of Nashville; her great-grandson, Luke Wright of Elizabethton; and her brothers and sisters, Ross Arnold and wife Carolyn and Maxine Corum, all of Mountain City, and Brenda Reece and husband Roland and Roy Arnold and wife Mary, all of Butler. MOUNTAIN CITY — Tommy Keith Garland, age 80, of Mountain City, Tennessee, passed away on Thursday, August 12, 2010, at the Mountain City Care Center.

He was born on December 26, 1929, to the late Dana Lilford and Nina Easter Davis Garland. In addition to his parents, Tommy was preceded in death by an infant sister, Winnie Lee; two additional sisters: Frieda Noens and Cherene Nichols; brothers: D.L. Garland and Del Garland; and a very special military friend, Dale L. Jackson.

Tommy was a retired carpenter and building contractor, was the former Superintendent of the Town of Mountain City Public Works and former operator of Shell Service Station of Mountain City. He was a member of Southside Freewill Baptist Church and a United States Army Veteran.

Tommy is survived by his wife of 43 years, Diane Garland; daughter: Beverly and husband, Carter Baker, of Bristol, VA, and Mandy L. Garland and Dennis Greene, of Butler, TN; sons: Michael K. Garland, of CA, James L. Garland and wife, Debbie, of Abingdon, VA, David L. Garland and wife, Karen, of Johnson City, TN, Andy Garland and Saul B. Garland, both of Mountain City, TN; brothers: Dearl Garland, of CA, and Gary Garland and wife, Donna, of Greeneville, TN; grandchildren: Courtney Garland, Preston Garland, Brantlee Garland, Bethany Garland, Zachary Greene, Karter Beth Baker, Gracie Baker and Melissa Brown; and several nieces and nephews.

Gary C. Garland of Tusculum, TN, passed away February 22nd at the age of 73. He was born on January 19, 1948 to the late Dana Lilford and Nina Easter Davis Garland.Gary grew up in Mountain City and was a 1967 graduate of Johnson County High School.

He was a veteran of the Vietnam War and received the following medals and commendations: National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal with three bronze services stars, Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal, Vietnamese Cross of Gallantry with Palm, Army Commendation Medal, Air Medal, and Marksman. In October of 1975, he came to Greene County as a Trooper for the Tennessee Highway Patrol and retired in 2002. Gary was a member of Shiloh Cumberland Presbyterian Church, where he had served as an Elder.

Survivors include his wife: Donna Brooks Hayes Garland; three children: Brett Garland, Holly Hayes Ferguson and husband, Kevin, Jesse Hayes and his wife, Amber; six grandchildren: Justin Gosnell, Joseph Gosnell, Grace Hayes, Martin Hayes, Allison Hayes, and Matthew Hayes; sister-in-law: Diane Garland; several nieces and nephews, including a special niece: Sandy Garland; father-in-law: J. C. Brooks; special brother-in-law: Phil Brooks; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law: Vicki and Jackie Nanney, Van and Debbie Brooks; special caregivers: Cindy Gosnell, Beth Harris, and Ashley Bailey.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by three sisters and two brothers-in-law: Frieda and Jerry Noens, Cherene and Bill Nichols and an infant, Winnie Lee; four brothers and three sisters-in-law: D.L. Tommy Arnold, 29, Rt. 3, Butler, was dead on arrival at Johnson County Memorial Hospital after a logging accident Monday morning.

A life-long resident of Johnson County, Mr. Arnold was employed as a logger and was a member of the Little Doe Baptist Church. He was preceded in death by his grandmother, Mrs. Eliza Arnold, in 1975.

Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Faye Brickey Arnold; one daughter, April Dawn Arnold, of the home; his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Park Arnold, Rt. 1, Butler; one sister, Mrs. Lynn (Sandy) Snyder, Rt. 3, Butler; his maternal grandparents, Rev. and Mrs. Victor Broyles, Rt. 3, Butler; and his paternal grandfather, Ed Arnold, Rt. 1, Butler. Several aunts and uncles also survive.

Funeral services for Tommy Lewis Arnold, 29, Rt. 3, Butler, who died Monday morning, will be conducted at 2 p.m. Wednesday from the Little Doe Baptist Church, with the Rev. R. A. Royston and Mark Sparks, minister, officiating. Interment will be in the Butler Memorial Cemetery. The Sugar Grove Quartet will be in charge of music.
