ELIZABETHTON — The Lord welcomed a true Saint of God, Georgia Kate "Mama Georgie" Pope, 98, 723 Fairway Drive, Elizabethton, into his presence May 31, 2008, at Sycamore Shoals Hospital after a brief illness.

Georgia was a native of Johnson County and the daughter of the late George and Lou Buchanan Crosswhite. She was a member of the First Free Will Baptist Church yet attended Memorial Presbyterian as her health allowed.

In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband Charles H. Zolly Pope, son Jerry Pope, daughter-in-law: Joyce Pope and son-in-law: Sonny Hale, her Sisters: Etta Robinson, Sena McKinney, Emma Williams, Pheba Derthick, and Leone Lucke, her brothers Joe Crosswhite and Harlow Crosswhite.

Survivors include her devoted daughter: Joyce Pope Birchfield and her son-in-law that was more like a son to her, Jess Birchfield, of Elizabethton. A daughter: Leta Pope Hale, Elizabethton. Granddaughter: Dr. Katie Birchfield Gladstone and her husband Bob Gladstone of Hollywood, Florida, her nieces: Jean Campbell, Edith Fedyk and Carole Ann Vander Vlut. Nephews: Howard Bowers, Dean Crosswhite, Steve Lucke and Charles Lucke. A beloved special niece, angel Judy Deloach and her children Tiffany, Joey, Whitney, Joseph & Vic and many wonderful great nieces & nephews. Her very special friends: Crystall Cordell and Chris Pippin.

A Graveside Service will be conducted at 1 p.m. Tuesday in the Mausoleum of Peace, Happy Valley Memorial Park with the Rev. Preston Sartelle and Rev. Randy Johnson officiating. Music will be provided by David Arney and Carol Bowers and soloist granddaughter Katie Gladstone.

Active Pallbearers who are requested to assemble at the funeral home at 12:30 p.m. Tuesday will be: Ron Carver, Joseph Taylor, Vic Deloach, Howard Bowers, Kenny Goforth, Kenny Webb, Bill Greene, Bobby Glass, Ted Tipton and Steve Lucke. ELIZABETHTON — Dorothy Jean "Tootsie" Campbell, 83, Elizabethton, passed away Wednesday, June 1, 2011, in the Sycamore Shoals Hospital after a brief illness.

A native of Carter County, she was a daughter of the late F. Brass and Sena Crosswhite McKinney. She was a homemaker. Mrs Campbell was an active member of First Free Will Baptist Church. She had taught the Beginners Sunday School Class for over 40 years.

Tootsie was a care giver, always helping people in any way possible.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a son, Gary Allen Campbell, March 23, 2008.

Survivors include her husband of 64 years, John R. Campbell; A son & daughter-in-law: Randy & Susan Campbell, Powder Springs, Georgia; Three Grandsons: Jonathan Campbell and his fiancé, Samara Wilcox, Ian Campbell and his wife, Anne, and Garrett Campbell; A Great Grandson: Jesse Warren Campbell; A daughter-in-law: Margaret Campbell; A Sister-in-law: Katherine Emmert.

A Service to celebrate the life of Dorothy Jean Campbell will be conducted at 7 p.m. Thursday in Memorial Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Nathan Jennings and Rev. Jack Lloyd officiating.

Graveside Service and Interment will be at 11 a.m. Friday in the National Cemetery, Mountain Home. Music will be provided by Alecia Holder, Ian Campbell and Carolyn Pleasant, Pianist.

Active Pallbearers, who are requested to assemble at the funeral home at 10:15 a.m. Friday will be: Jonathan Campbell, Ian Campbell, Garrett Campbell, R.L. Hambrick, Tommy Pleasant, Spencer "Bo" Campbell, Grady Holder and Greg Moreland. Honorary Pallbearers will be Shannon Long and her Church Family.

The family will receive friends from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday in the funeral home. Friends may also call at the residence. Family and friends will assemble at the funeral home at 10:15 a.m. Friday to go to the cemetery.

Eugene Bowers, 76, 704 S. Riverside Drive, Elizabethton, died Monday, July 3, 2000, at Sycamore Shoals Hospital following an extended illness.

Mr. Bowers was a native of Carter County and the son of the late Hunter and Emma Crosswhite Bowers. He was also preceded in death by a sister, Thelma Goforth, and his stepfather, Agee D. Williams.

Mr. Bowers was a member of First Free Will Baptist Church of Elizabethton and a retired mechanical draftsman with Great Lakes Research Corporation.

Survivors include his wife, Mary Edens Bowers, of the home; a daughter, Debra Bowers Pierce, Elizabethton; a brother and sister-in-law, J. Howard and Rowena Bowers, Johnson City; a sister, Elaine Proffitt, Bluff City; and four nephews, Kenny Goforth, Kingsport, Rick Bowers, Jonesborough, Robert and Mark Proffitt, both of Bluff City.

J. Howard "Lefty" Bowers, 90, of Johnson City, Tenn., passed away on Sunday, October 29, 2017, at The Waters of Johnson City, Tenn. He was a native of Elizabethton, Tenn., and son of the late Hunter Bowers and Emma Crosswhite Bowers. Howard's hobbies were running, weightlifting, bicycle riding, golf, and horseback riding. He enjoyed spending time with his wife, son, three granddaughters and great-granddaughter and also watching his son and granddaughters play sports. Howard also donated his time by volunteering at ETSU, Holston Habitat for Humanity, and the Veterans Administration.
Howard proudly served his country in the U.S. Navy during WWII. Howard held a Doctorate of Education from the University of Tennessee where he was a research associate and retired as Professor of Education at East Tennessee State University. He taught at Unaka Elementary, coached football at Unaka High School and Tennessee High where he was also a health and science teacher. Mr. Bowers then taught at Elizabeth City Elementary and Jr. High schools and was the school superintendent in Elizabeth City schools.
In addition to his parents, Howard was preceded in death by his step-father, Agee Williams; his brother, Eugene Bowers; and his sister, Thelma Goforth.
Those left to cherish Howard's memory include his loving wife, Rowena Shipley Bowers; son, Rick Bowers; granddaughters, Emma Bowers of Greenville, S.C., Hannah Bowers and Rachel Bowers of Jonesborough, Tenn.; nephew, Kenneth Goforth of Kingsport, Tenn.; niece, Debra Gene Pierce of Elizabethton, Tenn.; sister-in-law, Mary Bowers of Elizabethton, Tenn.; step-sister, Elaine Profitt; and several cousins.
The family will greet friends to share memories on Wednesday, November 1, from 1 until 2 p.m. at the Mausoleum Chapel at Happy Valley Memorial Park in Elizabethton with a Celebration of Life service at 2 p.m. with Dr. Tim Ross officiating. Active pallbearers include Pete Peterson, Peter Shoun, Gary Arner, Billy Shipley, Kenneth Goforth, Duard Walker, Harold Lingerfelt and John Wallace. LAUDERHILL, FL - Dr. Jessica Kate (Katie) Birchfield Gladstone of Lauderhill, Florida died Sunday, July 28, 2019 in the University Hospital, Tamarac, Florida.

Katie was born March 17, 1962 in the Johnson City Memorial Hospital. She was the daughter of Joyce Pope Birchfield and the late Jesse James Birchfield. Kate was a member of the First Freewill Baptist church of Elizabethton, Tennessee. She was a very active church member in Florida leading the youth choir and was a soloist.

Katie was a wonderful, beautiful lady with so much heart. She worked diligently to do the work of the Lord. Her ability to pray would bring the spirit of the Lord to all those present.

Katie was a 1980 graduate of Elizabethton High School. She earned a B.S. Degree from East Tennessee State University and was a member of the Jazz Singers and Dancers. Katie received her Doctorate from Southern College of Optometry in Memphis, Tennessee.

Katie was the owner and operator of I Care for Eyes in Pembrook Pines, Florida where she practiced for 27 years. She was fluent in Spanish as many of her patients were Hispanic. Katie was known by her patients for the loving special care they received.

Katie Loved the water, especially skiing and spending time on her house boat the Katiedid on Watauga Lake.

Katie was proceeded in death by her father, Jesse James Birchfield, her maternal grandmother, Georgia (Mama Georgia) Pope, her paternal grandparents, Sudie Birchfield and Jesse Birchfield,Sr., an uncle, Sonny Hale and an uncle and aunt Jerry and Joyce Pope.

Those left to cherish her memory include; her husband, Robert Gladstone of the home, her mother Joyce Pope Birchfield, her special aunt, Leta Hale, cousins, Judy Carol DeLoach and her husband Victor, Tiffany Jenkins, Joey Garrison and her husband Josh, Whitney Taylor, Joseph Taylor and his wife Leslie and her Godson, Vic DeLoach, two much loved fur babies, Taipei and Hanji.

A service to honor Dr. Jessica Kate (Katie) Birchfield Gladstone will be conducted at 3:00 PM Thursday in the chapel of the Mausoleum of Peace at Happy Valley Memorial Park, Elizabethton, TN. Entombment will follow in the mausoleum. Those wishing to attend the committal service are asked to meet at the cemetery at 2:45 PM Thursday.

Presiding ministers will be Rev. Raymond Amos and Rev. Randy Johnson.
