Harry Jenkins

Notes:

Stover Jenkins was one of the organizers of the Elizabethton Insurance Agency,the first of its kind in the county.He was First Asst. Cashier in the newly established Carter County Bank in 1906.He served in the Carter County Court for many years and was Chairman of the court in1918.He also held the office of Justice of the Peace for many years and was aciive in the First Baptist Church.He was a delegate to the Watauga Baptist Association in 1906.He died in at the age of 78.

Capt. David Boyle Jenkins was born up on Stony Creek in Carter County,Tennessee,the son of James Jenkins and Catherine Bolling.Before the Civil War, he worked as a hammerman in the local iron works.When the war broke out, he was the first man from Carter County to volunteer in the Union Army.He first served as a Sergeant in Company F of the 2nd Tenn. Vol. Inf. Regiment[USA] before accepting a 1st Lieutenant's commission in his brother William's cavalry unit,Company C,13th Reg. Tenn. Vol. Cavalry[USA].He later became company commander of Company C and fought through the entire duration of the war.Returning home, he was employed as a tax collector,he bought and sold real estate and built and operated a water turbine powered flour mill. He died in the house he built next to the flour mill down on Race Street.

David married Levisa Evaline Stover about 1869 in Carter County, , , Tennessee. Levisa (daughter of Solomon Hendrix Stover and Mary Ann Treadway) was born on 15 Mar 1851 in Carter County, , , Tennessee; died on 15 May 1930 in Carter County, , , Tennessee; was buried in Highland Cemetery, , Carter County, Tennessee. Evaline was born on the Watauga River in Carter County, the granddaughter of Daniel and Phoebe Ward Stover.The Stover's and the Ward's were pioneer families of East Tennessee. She was the wife of Capt. David Boyle Jenkins, a veteran of the Civil War.She was the mother of six children and a lifelong member of the Baptist Church.She was loved and esteemed by all who knew her.

Second wife of James A. Pierce and the youngest daughter of the Reverend John W. Davis Carty and Catherine Kelly .One of a set of twins born 3 May 1833, her twin brother being Joseph Elliot Carty. Her father was a pioneer Baptist preacher who began his ministry in the historic Sinking Creek Church. Her mother was the daughter of Richard Kelly and Catherine Howell- Richard being one of Carter County's Revolutionary War veterans. James and Mary were married 27 July 1852 in Elizabethton. The marriage produced ten children : Joseph Hall , Loretta , William Carty , Elizabeth Ann , Stanton J. , Laura , Caroline Narcissus , John Franklin , Barbara Adeline and Virginia Cordelia Pierce , all born between 1854 and 1875.Mary was preceded in death by her husband, who passed away 29 Oct 1883 and is buried in the Holston plot in the Rogersville Methodist Cemetery.
