Charles Hughes was born on October 13, 1805 in Burke, North Carolina, United States, the only child of William (age 47) and Cherokee Indian Maiden (age 35). He married Matilda Young in Toe River Valley, Mitchell, North Carolina, United States and had 10 children, four daughters and six sons, with her. Charles lived for more than 100 years, dying in 1909 at the impressive age of 103.

Charles married Matilda Young about 1835 in , Yancey County, , North Carolina. Matilda was born on 26 Sep 1820 in Burke County, , , North Carolina; died about 1887 in Mitchell County, , , North Carolina; was buried in Hughes Odom Cemetery, , Mitchell County, North Carolina. Matilda Young was born in 1820 in NORTH CAROLINA, the only child of Wilson (age 29) and Elizabeth Hughes (age 20). She married Charles Hughes in Toe River Valley, Mitchell, North Carolina, United States and had 10 children, six sons and four daughters, with him. Matilda died in 1887 in BULADEAN, MITCHELL CO., NC (HUGHES CEM.) when she was 67.

As the story goes Big Charles Hughes went and picked Matilda up shortly after she was born, put his bandana on her for a diaper, and took her home with him. When she was old enough to marry, he married her and was her husband until she died.
